Thermal Preference May Facilitate Spatial Coexistence of Two Invasive Fish Species in Lake Bosten, China

چکیده

As aquaculture food production is expected to increase, introduced species play an important role in meeting the rising demand for aquatic products and contributing great societal benefits. Species introduction forces sympatric coexist within same ecosystem by niche segregation. Spatial distribution and sources of organic carbon in the surface sediment of Bosten Lake, China

Lake sediment is an important carbon reservoir. However, little is known on the dynamics and sources of sediment organic carbon in Bosten Lake. We collected 13 surface (0–2 cm) sediment samples in Bosten Lake and analyzed total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), stable carbon isotopic composition in TOC (δCorg), and grain size. We found a large spatial variability in TOC content (1.8– 4...

Two new fish species captured in Otsego Lake tributaries

While the Otsego Lake watershed supports a large diversity of fish species, the list present in the watershed has been continuously updated since the original publication by McWatters (1980,1983). New species have been documented by Hayes and Foster (1989), Foster (1989), Foster and ColIura (1990), and Brooking ( 1991) and the extinction of a species has also been reported by Lehman el al., (19...

Spatial distribution of littoral fish species in a large European lake, Lake Constance

The spatial distribution and patterns of habitat use of littoral fish species in Lake Constance were studied using electric fishing and trammel net sampling to assess fish abundance and biomass in three depth strata at six different sampling sites within the littoral zone. Distribution differences among depth strata were found to be often more pronounced than among different sampling sites. Juv...

Increased competition may promote species coexistence.

It is a mainstay of community ecology that local exclusion of species will result if competitive pressures become too large. The pattern of exclusion may be complicated, but the qualitative orthodoxy has changed little since the pioneering work of Lotka, Volterra, and Gause--no two species can occupy the same niche. Stated in a more precise form, the higher the intensity of interspecific compet...
